Take Test 6, C1 Use of English Part 3

CAE Use of English Part 3, Test 6 – Colour vision

Answers and explanations

  1. Handful. ‘A handful of something’ means a limited number of it. The idea here is that only a few species possess colour vision similar to that of humans.
  2. Evolutionary. An adjective – be wary not to use -ing to form it. A rather long word, so mind your spelling as well!
  3. Reliant. Yet another case where the temptation to use -ing is high. ‘Reliant’ is the ‘proper’ (for the lack of a better word) adjective.
  4. Ripened. To ripen means to be grown enough – used mainly to talk about fruits, vegetables, and seeds.
  5. Poisonous. Knowing that it is an adjective is winning half the battle. Getting the spelling right might be a bit tricky, though. And again, no -ing forms.
  6. Ability. A noun with no negative prefixes – the context already states the negative, so we are not looking to double it.
  7. Personally. Another option that would fit grammatically and even contextually (to some extent) would be ‘personnel’ – meaning staff, or people who work for him. However, the context makes it clear that we are talking about Mark himself and not other people or their preferences.
  8. Inconvenience. An inconvenience is something that disturbs you because it causes annoyance or discomfort. It is a rather mild word and fits perfectly with the rest of the idea. Make sure to get the negative prefix right.
