Part 5

Questions 21-26
For each question, choose the correct answer.

The Wrong Address

A few months ago, I ordered a birthday present for my sister online. She lives in Scotland, so I was careful to enter her address correctly before I clicked ‘buy.’ At least, I thought I was careful. A week later, I received a message from the delivery company saying the parcel had been left in a safe place at number 42. My sister lives at number 44.

I immediately contacted the company, but they said the parcel had been delivered to the address I gave them and there was nothing they could do. I felt frustrated, and I was not sure what to do 21 . The house at number 42 belonged to someone I had never met, and I did not feel comfortable knocking on a stranger’s door.

In the end, I decided to write a short note and post it through the letterbox. I explained the situation, apologised for the 22 , and left my phone number. I tried to keep the tone friendly and polite. A few hours later, my phone rang. It was a woman called Pauline, who said she had the parcel and invited me to come and 23 it up whenever I liked.

When I arrived, Pauline was waiting at the door. She handed me the parcel and asked what was inside. When I told her, she laughed and said she had done exactly the same thing herself the year before. We ended up having a cup of tea together, and we discovered that we had quite a lot 24 common. She had moved to the area only six months earlier and did not know many people yet.

Since that day, Pauline and I have become good friends. We meet for coffee every couple of weeks, and she even came to my sister’s birthday party later that summer. It is funny to think that a simple mistake brought someone new into my life. I suppose it shows that good things can sometimes come 25 problems. All it 26 is a little bit of courage to knock on the door, or in my case, to write a note.
