A Book I Borrowed

I am usually very careful with books. I do not bend the pages, I never write in the margins, and I certainly do not lend them to people I do not trust. So when my neighbour Daniel asked if he could borrow my favourite novel, I hesitated. He promised to look 27 it and return it within two weeks. Against my better judgement, I said yes.

A month went by, and I heard nothing. I reminded him once in passing, and he said he had almost finished. Another month passed. The book had been gone 28 so long that I started to forget what the cover looked like. I began to think I would never see it again.

Then, one Saturday morning, I found a package outside my front door. Inside was my book, wrapped in brown paper. There was also a note from Daniel. He explained that he had moved to a new flat and the book had been packed away in a box 29 mistake. He apologised and said he hoped I had not been 30 angry with him.

I was not angry at all. In fact, I was so pleased to have the book back that I sat down and started reading it again immediately. It was just 31 good as I remembered. Sometimes losing something, even for a while, reminds you 32 much you value it.
