Making a Decision
Out of the blue, my friend Lena told me she decided to leave her job and go back to university. She was thirty-two and had been working in the same office 27 she was twenty-two. She said she had thought about it for a long time and had finally decided it was now 28 never.
I was surprised. She had a good salary and got on well with her colleagues. But she explained that she had always wanted to study history, and she felt that life was too short to keep waiting for the right moment. “If I don’t do it now, I’ll regret it 29 the rest of my life,” she said.
The first few months were hard. She went from earning a regular wage to having very little money. Her evenings were filled with books instead of friends, and she sometimes wondered 30 she had made a terrible mistake. There were moments 31 she felt like giving up and going back to her old boss to ask for her job back.
But she kept going, and slowly things improved. She discovered that she loved researching and writing, and her professors encouraged her to apply for a place on a research trip abroad. She did, and she was accepted. When I saw her last month, she looked happier than I had 32 seen her. “It was the best decision I ever made,” she said.
