The Watch
When my grandfather passed away, my mother gave me his old watch. It was not an expensive item. In fact, it had probably cost very little when it was new, and the leather strap was worn so thin in places that I was worried it might 21 . But I liked the simple design, and wearing it made me feel close to him.
A few months later, I noticed that the watch had started losing time. At first it was only a minute or two each day, but soon it was 22 behind by almost half an hour. I took it to a repair shop, where the man behind the counter examined it carefully and shook his head. ‘I’m sorry,’ he said, ‘but the parts inside are too old. There’s nothing I can do.’
I went home feeling upset. I knew the watch was not 23 much money, but that did not matter to me. It had belonged to someone I loved, and that made it precious in a different way. I put it in a drawer, thinking I would never wear it again. A few weeks later, I happened to mention the situation to a colleague at work. She listened and then said, ‘My brother repairs old watches. He might be able to help.’
I decided to 24 it a go. I gave her the watch, and she passed it on to her brother. A few weeks went by with no news, and I began to think I had made a mistake. Then, one afternoon, she appeared at my desk holding a small box. Inside was the watch, working perfectly. Her brother had managed to find an old part from a 25 watch and fit it into mine.
I wear the watch every day now. It still looks old, but that is exactly what I like about it. Every time I check the 26 , I am reminded not only of my grandfather but also of the kindness of a colleague who went out of her way to help.
