A New Way to Travel

My cousin Maria and I decided to try something different. Instead of flying or taking the train, we planned to cycle from our town to the coast. It was a distance of about eighty kilometres, which we knew would 21 us most of the day.

We set off early on a Saturday morning. The first hour was lovely, with the sun just coming up and very 22 traffic on the country roads. By mid-morning, however, my legs were starting to ache. Maria was telling me to drink more water and to 23 going no matter how tired I felt. ‘We’re nearly halfway,’ she said, although I wasn’t entirely sure I believed her.

We stopped for lunch in a small village. There was a little café by the river where we ate sandwiches and rested for a while. The owner was very friendly and asked us where we were going. When we told him, he looked impressed and 24 us both a free slice of cake. It was exactly what we needed.

The afternoon was harder, but we pushed each other onwards. When we finally saw the sea in the distance, I felt a huge sense of 25 . We had actually done it. We found a place to stay, locked up our bikes, and went straight to the beach to put our feet in the cold water.

It took us three days to recover, but I’m really glad we made the 26 to go. I’d never travelled that way before, and it made the destination feel earned.
